Dean's Blog

Thanks to Kirsty for sending me this image of what she tells me is a Northern Saw-whet Owl - perched in an Arbutus unedo (Strawberry Tree) near her faculty building.

She told me that while out showing a co-worker some resident Hummingbirds - they spotted the owl - sound a sleep in the tree! The hummingbird feeder was not far from the owl and they continued to feed. Then flying right in front of the owl - the hummingbirds observed it, a little concerned. She said the owl just tried to continue to sleep...

It’s really helpful to have people share their experiences of the campus landscape.

For the past few weeks I've been enjoying the colour and fragrance of this Hamamelis (commonly known as Witch Hazel) shrub. A nice treat on the way in from the bus loop!

On a raw day like this I'm wondering when it will ever feel like spring again. This Corylopsis pauciflora (Buttercup Winter Hazel) helps to brighten up the day. The plant below is Acanthus mollis (Bear's Breeches). It's summertime flowers are considered the design inspiration for the capitals on a Corinthian column. This image taken near the Gage Residences.

The sun came out yesterday but it was deceptively chilly - no takers on the new benches installed recently on Main Mall (in front of Chemistry). Redevelopment of the Mall north of Koerner Plaza will begin soon. The full length south to Thunderbird Commons is scheduled for completion by September 2012!
