Beautify My Bike Cage Mural Contest Winner (2017): Shavonne Yu

Shavonne Yu's design represents an optimistic vision of UBC’s future, propelling itself towards a more sustainable, interconnected future.

Congratulations to Shavonne Yu for winning the Second Annual Beautify My Bike Cage, a mural contest designed to animate an underutilized space and celebrate cycling culture on campus. Theme of this year's contest was 'Cycling, Health & Wellbeing'. We are excited to announce the mural completion by Shavonne and her close friends, in time for Safe & Sustainable Transportation Month in May. Make sure to check out the mural at UBC's Fraser Parkade Bike Cage.

Shavonne’s mural design draws parallels between the intricacy of the humble bike to the dire need for systems thinking in communities. Powered by hydro, wind, and solar energy, the bike in mural represents an optimistic vision of UBC’s future, propelling itself towards a more sustainable, interconnected future.

Shavonne is currently a second year Media Studies student at UBC. Her passions span across the artistic spectrum: she enjoys exploring mediums such as graphic design, music, photography, and now - mural painting. Combining an affinity for art with a desire to service the community, her work seeks to preserve a sense of child-like wonder while striving to create meaningful, well-designed work.
