Child Care Expansion Plan for Vancouver Campus

UBC is dedicated to providing high‑quality, accessible child care across both academic and neighbourhood lands. As the campus community grows, UBC is committed to expanding child care capacity in step with population increases, ensuring that families who live, study, and work at UBC have access to the services they need.

Child Care at UBC

UBC has long been a leader in the provision of high-quality child care, and is the largest provider of institutionally operated, on-campus childcare in North America. The supply has steadily increased over the last 40 years, with most spaces developed for children of students, faculty, staff, and neighbourhood residents.

UBC currently operates 1,033 licensed child care spaces across academic and neighbourhood lands through a coordinated system that includes UBC Child Care (part of Student Housing and Community Services), University Neighbourhoods Association (UNA)-managed centres and a small number of third-party operators.

Child Care Expansion Plan

Updated in 2026, the Childcare Expansion Plan reflects major changes since it was first introduced in 2009 and later updated in 2018—including the adoption of Campus Vision 2050, which anticipates roughly 24,000 more residents on campus, and the Province’s evolving ChildCareBC approach that enhances affordability and operating support while pacing future growth more gradually.
