North Campus Area

Where nature meets culture. Home to Cecil Green Park, Green College, and the Museum of Anthropology, North Campus has educational, heritage and ecological value.

Overview

MOA
The Museum of Anthropology is located in North Campus

North Campus is a ‘Special Plan Area’ primarily for institutional use. It is characterized by leisure and learning opportunities which give it a strong sense of place. North Campus is home to the renowned Museum of Anthropology as well as Cecil Green Park and Coach House.

This plan was approved as a “Neighbourhood Plan” in 2004, and the policy and regulatory context of UBC has changed substantially since its approval.

Since North Campus includes institutional and administrative uses only, it is no longer considered a “neighbourhood,” and the previous Neighbourhood Plan is now known as an "Area Plan."

The Area Plan

In 2004, a comprehensive Hydrogeological and Cliff Erosion Assessment was completed as part of the neighbourhood planning process. Because of its proximity to the Pacific Spirit Regional Park, environmental protection and stewardship will always be a priority in any planning related to the North Campus neighbourhood.

The plan outlines guidance around:

  • The relationship to Pacific Spirit Regional Park, including a green buffer zone and protection of view corridors and access to trails.
  • A setback to protect the top-of-bank from cliff erosion.
  • An extension of Main Mall Greenway into North Campus, including system for pedestrian and bicycle circulation.
  • Enhancing public transit, pedestrian and bicycle access to North Campus.

All buildings in the North Campus Area Plan were already existing at the time the plan was adopted in 2004. Public realm improvements are completed. Building upgrades are ongoing, including the seismic upgrading of the Museum of Anthropology.
