LEED 4.0 Requirements

UBC is accelerating the transformation to high-performing green buildings on campus to align with the university’s climate action and sustainability priorities.

UBC Building Certification Requirements

Since 2008 the BC government has required that all public-sector buildings, newly constructed or undergoing major renovation, achieve LEED Gold or equivalent certification.  UBC requires all Tier 1 and Tier 3A projects to be LEED Gold certified using the most suitable LEED rating system.

Alternative certifications may be considered where appropriate (for example certification through the Zero Carbon Building Standard, Passive House or Living Building Challenge). In all cases alternative certifications should be pre-approved.

LEED Requirements

UBC requires that LEED Gold certification for new construction and major renovation projects follow the UBC LEED 4.0 Implementation Guide. The Guide is intended to provide project teams with UBC-specific guidance on LEED credits for the campus, identifying credits that are mandatory and/or expected because they align with UBC policies and those which have been identified as less beneficial to the campus because they do not directly align with policy.

About LEED

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is a third-party certification program and an internationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings.

LEED promotes a holistic approach to sustainability by recognizing performance in five key areas of human and environmental health, which include:

  • Sustainable site development
  • Water efficiency
  • Energy efficiency
  • Materials selection
  • Indoor environmental quality

LEED certification is based on total points achieved in the above categories, following an independent review. Four levels of certification can be granted: Certified, Silver, Gold and Platinum.

LEED Implementation Guides

UBC has developed LEED Implementation Guides for both LEED 2009 and LEED 4.0 which are aimed at design teams working to achieve LEED Gold certification on UBC building projects.  The guides provide helpful information as well indicating which credits are mandatory, optional and not available at UBC.
