The UBC Vancouver Transportation Plan describes how the university plans to support the efficient and sustainable movement of people to, from, and around campus over the coming decades. Building on nearly thirty years of sustainable transportation leadership, the plan responds to rapid campus growth, evolving commuter patterns, climate action imperatives, and anticipated major regional transit investments like the planned extension of the SkyTrain Millennium Line to UBC.

The Transportation Plan serves as UBC’s integrated transportation and demand management strategy, complementing the Land Use Plan, Campus Plan, and neighbourhood plans, which provide policy direction and guidelines for campus transportation networks and related infrastructure.

The 2026 UBC Vancouver Transportation Plan

UBC’s first Transportation Plan was adopted in 1999 and updated in 2005 and 2014. The latest plan was developed as part of implementation of Campus Vision 2050 alongside concurrent updates to the UBC Vancouver Campus Plan. The 2026 UBC Vancouver Transportation Plan focuses on transportation demand management, enabling sustainable travel choices, and improving the experience of moving to, from and around campus for people of all ages and abilities. It establishes a renewed set of objectives, measurable targets, strategies and actions.

The plan establishes five objectives that will inform the prioritization and implementation of the plan’s strategies and actions:

  1. Advance Sustainable and Low-Carbon Transportation

Reduce transportation-related greenhouse gas and air pollutant emissions by prioritizing and encouraging the use of active and sustainable transportation options, and supporting the continued development of a compact, mixed-use campus community.

  2. Improve Accessibility and Choice for All

Provide a range of flexible, inclusive, and equitable transportation options that meet the diverse needs of the campus community.

  3. Enhance Safety, Experience, and Efficiency

Create a safe, convenient, and enjoyable transportation system for people of all ages and abilities, while reducing commute times and enabling efficient campus operations.

  4. Foster Innovation and Leadership

Position the campus as a leader and testbed for innovative, forward thinking transportation strategies that promote long-term behavioral and systemic change and leverage the campus as a living lab.

  5. Build Resilience and Adaptability

Design transportation systems and policies that can evolve with changing travel patterns, technologies, and climate conditions, ensuring long-term functionality and success.

The plan articulates three headline targets along with a broader suite of key performance indicators that will be monitored over time. See the Research & Reports section of this website for more details.
