The Red Oaks of Main Mall

As a natural part of aging and campus renewal, some trees decline and must be replaced with new trees.

As a natural part of aging and campus renewal, some trees decline and must be replaced with new trees. To maintain a safe campus, under the guidance of UBC’s arborists, we are currently replacing some of the Red Oak (Quercus Rubra) trees on Main Mall that are dead.

We are working with campus partners to reuse the larger, usable parts of the trees on campus.  The smaller parts will be chipped and used as garden mulch.

UBC Vancouver features around 11,000 planted trees and over 10,000 native trees in their natural settings. Campus trees have an enormous impact on the environmental, social, and economic well-being of all campus users. To maintain our shared inheritance we have been actively managing our campus trees and forested areas for close to 100 years.

The earliest original Red Oaks lining Main Mall were planted in the 1920s. Their broad canopies bring a sense of timeless dignity to our campus and lend themselves well to shading the pedestrian promenades. We maintain the Red Oaks on Main Mall to celebrate our history and maintain hallmarks of the original campus master plan.

We will continue to monitor and prune back other oaks on Main Mall to maintain the trees' optimal health and support a safe campus environment.
