Safe & Sustainable Transportation Month

UBC is committed to creating a pedestrian and cyclist-friendly campus community.

Throughout May and the first week of June, we celebrate safe, active and sustainable transportation with activities and events aimed at promoting walking and cycling on campus.

Jane’s Walk: May 3, 2019

Join us for a Jane's Walk on May 3 with Dean Gregory, University Landscape Architect at Campus & Community Planning. Jane's Walks are held annually around the world including at UBC to celebrate and honour urbanist Jane Jacobs, an advocate for sustainable and community-centred neighbourhoods.

This Jane's Walk will show how thoughtful planning is addressing the needs of students, faculty staff and visitors in a growing campus community. A tour of recently completed projects and projects underway will be visited including Library Garden, University Commons, the Bosque, MacInnes Field and University Boulevard will reveal how UBC’s plans and ambitions around the public realm, resiliency, biodiversity, climate change, zero waste, community engagement, and ecological and human wellbeing manifest in the texture of the evolving campus.

Register for the Jane’s Walk today! For more information, visit the Jane’s Walk website

Walking school buses, led by community volunteers will depart from select campus neighbourhoods to Norma Rose Point Elementary School and University Hill Elementary School each morning, using designated routes. Parents and students are encouraged to drop by the designated meeting spots at indicated times and walk or ride to school with friends and neighbours.

Kids can collect a sticker on their Walk ‘n Roll passport each morning, for a chance to win great prizes at the end of the week, including our grand prize for each school: a new scooter! Bike safety checks, RCMP speed watch, community foot patrols, bike obstacle courses and more will take place throughout the week as well.
