BMO Marathon Road Closure Alert

The BMO Vancouver Marathon is taking place on Sunday, May 5th. There will be road closures along the event route throughout the City of Vancouver all morning and early afternoon. Around UBC, road closures will be in effect between 8:00am and 12:30pm. It is strongly recommended to plan ahead and avoid driving during this time, particularly any trips to and from Wesbrook Place from 8:30am to 11am. Please review the below map for where road closures will be occurring. Further details into the timing of road closures is as follows:

  • 8:00 am – 10:00 am SW Marine westbound/northbound CLOSED between West 49th Avenue and Camosun Street
  • 8:30 am – 11:00 am West 16th Ave CLOSED from Imperial to SW Marine Drive.
  • 8:45 am – 11 :30am NW/SW Marine Drive CLOSED from West 16th Avenue to Chancellor Blvd
  • 9:00 am – 12:15pm NW Marine Drive CLOSED from Chancellor Blvd to West 4th Ave

ALL ROADS AROUND UBC WILL BE REOPENED BY 12:30PM

Impacts to Wesbrook Place Neighbourhood

Wesbrook Place is the most impacted area of UBC during the event. Wesbrook Place vehicle traffic can EXIT the neighbourhood via Wesbrook Mall to SW Marine Drive at all times, however, vehicle traffic TO Wesbrook Place is generally not possible from 8:30am to 11am. For greater clarity, the options and timelines for different access points to the neighbourhood during the event are as follows:

  • From 41st Avenue and SW Marine Drive before 8am or after 10am.
  • Across 16th Avenue at Wesbrook Mall or East Mall before 8:30am or after 11am through gaps in runners (flaggers will be present, anticipate delays).

Any visitors or residents that get stuck during the event can park in any available parking along Wesbrook Mall from 16th Avenue to Thunderbird Boulevard and then walk the rest of the way into the neighbourhood. Parking will be free of charge from 8:30am to 11am in this area only. 

Impacts to the Rest of UBC

To travel to and from the rest of the UBC campus north of 16th Avenue,  use University Boulevard or Chancellor Boulevard / 4th Avenue. Be mindful of the rest of the road closures throughout the rest of the City of Vancouver.

Emergency vehicle access will be maintained at all times and access to UBC Hospital and St. John Hospice will be available at all times from University Boulevard to Wesbrook Mall.

The BMO Vancouver Marathon is Canada’s largest marathon and has earned the designation of one of the World’s Top Destination Marathons. There are three different events, a full marathon, a half-marathon and an 8km race. This year’s marathon event is at capacity with 6,500 participants and there are a total 22,000 participants running in all three events.

  • 9:00 am -12:15am NW Marine Drive CLOSED from Chancellor Blvd to West 4th Ave

Event Details 

  • Access will be maintained to St. John Hospice at all times
  • Access to Botanical Garden via Stadium Road as gaps in runners permit
  • Access to Green College/Cecil Green via Chancellor Boulevard as gaps in runners permit
  • Access to Rose Garden Parkade will be maintained from Chancellor Boulevard by alternating, one-way traffic
  • Vehicle access TO Wesbrook Place is generally not possible from 9am to 11am. It is recommended to plan ahead and avoid driving TO Wesbrook Place during this time. Options and timelines for different access points as follows:
    • Across 16th Avenue at Wesbrook Mall or East Mall before 9am or after 11am.
    • From 41st Avenue to SW Marine Drive before 8am or after 10am.
  • Registration is required
  • No alcohol, no food 
  • Entertainment will be provided at 16th Avenue and Wesbrook from 9:00 am – 11:30 am 
  • Lyrics will be family friendly. Sound not to exceed 90 decibels in immediate area. 
  • First aid will be onsite
