Construction and Roadwork Updates

The UBC campus is always growing and changing so it's common to encounter construction and road closures. The map below will help you locate existing construction areas and road closures at UBC Vancouver. It is updated regularly to make navigating campus easier.

Campus Maps

Approximately 400m of aging water main along 16th Avenue from Wesbrook Mall to Binning Road needs replacement. The work will take place between April 22nd and June 30th and construction impacts will be localized to the eastbound curb lane on 16th Avenue and the northbound lane of Wesbrook Mall at the roundabout. During construction, access to, from and around Wesbrook Place will be maintained, however, there will be detours in place so residents and visitors should anticipate some delays when driving around. Campus and Community Planning is working closely with the project team to minimize disruption as much as possible.

Access to and from Wesbrook Place & Commercial / Retail Businesses:

  • The first phase of construction is across the northbound lane of Wesbrook Mall at the roundabout. This will take place from May 1 – 11. During this period and during working hours (7:30am to around 5pm), the northbound lane on Wesbrook Mall will be CLOSED from Berton Avenue to 16th Avenue and all northbound traffic (excluding buses) will be detoured onto Ross Drive or Binning Road (see map below).
  • Detour signage will be in place on Wesbrook Mall at Ross Drive from May 1 – 11, but local traffic can still continue to use Wesbrook Mall from Ross Drive to Berton Avenue.
  • Access TO Wesbrook Place at 16th Avenue and Wesbrook Mall will remain OPEN throughout construction.
  • Access TO & FROM Wesbrook Place at 16th Avenue and Ross Drive will remain OPEN throughout construction.
  • The eastbound curb lane on 16th Avenue will be closed from Wesbrook Mall to Binning Road for the duration of the project.
  • For one week in June, the northbound lane of Wesbrook Mall at the roundabout will be closed again and detours will be in place. Dates to be confirmed.
  • The multi-use pathway along the south side of 16th Avenue will be open throughout most of construction, with the exception of a short duration early in May when pedestrians will be detoured. Flaggers will be present to assist with detours.
  • The pedestrian crossing across 16th Avenue near Binning Road and Hampton Place will be open for use throughout construction. The pedestrian crossing across 16th Avenue on the east side of Wesbrook Mall will be closed for a short duration early in May and pedestrians will be detoured to the west side of Wesbrook Mall.

Buses

  • Buses on Wesbrook Mall will continue to run as scheduled.
  • The #25 and #33 bus stop eastbound 16th Avenue east of Wesbrook Mall (Bus Stop ID 51484) will be temporarily closed from May 1 – 13.

Access to UHill Secondary School:

  • To avoid delays, it is recommended that pick-up / drop-off activity for the school take place from Ross Drive. However, if the use of the Village parking lot by the Community Centre is preferred, use Ross Drive and Birney Avenue to reduce delays.

The BMO Vancouver Marathon is happening on Sunday May 5th. Road closures along the event route will be in effect throughout the City of Vancouver all morning and early afternoon. Around UBC, road closures will be in effect between 8am and 12pm. It is strongly recommended to plan ahead and avoid any driving trips TO Wesbrook Place during this time.

Emergency vehicle access will be maintained at all times and access to UBC Hospital and St. John Hospice will be available at all times from University Boulevard at Blanca to Wesbrook Mall.

  • Construction work related to the Neighbourhood District Energy System will affect parking and local traffic.
  • Resident parking along the east side of Wesbrook Mall from south of Binning Avenue to north of Ross Drive will be CLOSED starting February 1.
  • The northbound lane on Wesbrook Mall will be CLOSED from Monday, February 5 to approximately March 29, resulting in single lane alternating traffic in the southbound lane between Binning Avenue and Ross Drive.
  • Work hours are 7:30am to 7pm on weekdays, though work is anticipated to end earlier than 7pm each day.
  • Outside of work hours, the northbound lane on Wesbrook Mall will be reopened to traffic, but parking will remain closed.
  • Priority will be given to buses at all times.
  • Delays should be anticipated, so please plan alternate routes for non-local trips.

Construction on Lot 6, future home of Wordsworth, at the corner of Ross Drive and Birney Avenue will begin in June 2023 and is expected to be completed in Fall 2025. Visit the traffic management page for an overview of the traffic control that will be in place during construction to minimize impacts to the neighbourhood.

Walter Gage Road east of East Mall will remain closed until fall 2024. Pedestrians are detoured around the site as shown in the map above.

The second phase of Brock Commons is underway on Walter Gage Road just east of East Mall with Brock Commons North opening fall 2023. The main impact of this project is the full closure of Walter Gage Road between East Mall and Tallwood House.

Extended Construction Work Hours

In an effort to ensure the project is completed on time, an application to work outside the restricted construction hours has been approved by Campus and Community Planning. The new construction hours will be from 6:00am to 8:00pm, Mondays to Fridays and 8:00am to 5:00pm on Saturdays. Any work taking place on Weekdays or Sundays prior to regulated work hours will not include machinery or loud tools.

The following steps will be taken to mitigate the noise impact:

  • Any work that produces a substantial amount of noise such as cutting and hammering will not take place prior to 7:30am.
  • Every effort will be made to ensure the construction work will be completed before 7:00PM.

The new construction hours may be extended if needed. Check this webpage for any further updates.

The construction hours are being extended to make up for time that was lost during a recent labour dispute with the concrete suppliers. The C+CP compliance office will continue to work with the UNA to ensure there is minimal disruption to the community.

Construction for the new Food and Beverage Innovation Centre located on the south side of Hospital Lane between East Mall and Health Sciences Mall is currently underway. This will result in the full closure of Hospital Lane. Pedestrians will be detoured to the north side of the School of Population and Public Health building as shown in the map above.

Visit the Food and Beverage Innovation Centre project page to learn more about this project.

An expansion to the Beaty Biodiversity Centre is current underway and will result in some road closures that are typically used by pedestrians, cyclists and service vehicles (see map above). Visit the project page to learn more about the addition.
