Construction related road closures

There is upcoming construction resulting in road closures on the west side of campus. Utility work for the Lower Mall Precinct development and Sauder Powerhouse Expansion, as well as expansion to the District Energy System will be done from February to November 2026.

This work will be done in phases to minimize impact to the campus community.

Click here for details of each phase.

Construction for Lot 26 in Wesbrook Place began October 2025 with a targeted completion date of November 2027.

Road Closure of Ross Drive - February 9th for approximately eight weeks

  • The final stage of excavation work for Lot 26 in Wesbrook Place requires a temporary closure of one lane on Ross Drive.
  • Work will begin on Monday, February 9th and is expected to last approximately eight weeks.
  • One lane will be closed during working hours only and flaggers will be on site to accommodate local two-way traffic in the open lane.
  • A flagger will also be positioned at the driveway to Nobel House to ensure safe access for residents.
  • Parking adjacent to the construction site will remain closed for the duration of the project.

Traffic Safety and Management

UBC is working closely with the UNA to manage construction activity in the neighbourhoods. We carefully consider road closure requests and explore alternatives to minimize disruption for residents and visitors as much as possible.

  • Key impact of this work is the detour for pedestrians moving north south in the area. Use the sidewalk on the east side of Wesbrook Mall or Athlete’s Walk west of War Memorial Gym.

An expansion to the Beaty Biodiversity Centre is current underway and will result in some road closures that are typically used by pedestrians, cyclists and service vehicles (see map above). Visit the project page to learn more about the addition.

  • Placement of the erosion sediment control tanks was completed December 23rd and tree relocations will be completed by end of day December 24th.
  • The sidewalk and parking in front of BCR7 will be reopened by end of day December 24th. No activity on the site between December 24thand December 29th.

BCR7 Wesbrook Place construction and traffic management plan

Development of BCR6 on the corner of Wesbrook Mall and Binning Avenue will have some impact on roads and traffic.

  • Binning Avenue east of Wesbrook Mall is currently closed to the general public.
  • The sidewalk along the east side of Wesbrook Mall along the length of the construction site and the contractor parking will be intermittently closed for safety during construction activity. Pedestrians will be detoured to the sidewalk along the west side of Wesbrook Mall during this time.
  • Parking along the east side of Wesbrook Mall will be intermittently closed to accommodate construction needs throughout construction.
  • Nearly all construction related traffic are to arrive and depart the site to the south to reduce impacts on the community.
