Construction and Road Closure Updates

The UBC campus is always growing and changing so it's common to encounter construction and road closures. The map below will help you locate existing construction areas and road closures at UBC Vancouver. It is updated regularly to make navigating campus easier.

Road Closures June 2025

Event related road closures and impact

Location: Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre

Date: Saturday, October 25, 2025 and Sunday, October 26, 2025

Time: 7:00 PM – 11:00 PM

Road Closures:

  • UBC Parking will close roads 30 minutes before the concert ends to expedite traffic exiting Thunderbird Parkade.
  • Two lanes will be used to exit the parkade, turning right onto Thunderbird Blvd West, then left at East Mall to 16th Avenue.

Parking Restrictions:

  • No parking on: 
    • East side of East Mall (between Thunderbird Blvd and 16th Ave)
    • West side of East Mall (from FP Innovations to 16th Ave).
  • These restrictions will be in effect from 6:00 PM until midnight.

Osborne Lot Closure:

  • Closed from 3:00 PM onward on event day.
  • Only open for persons with disabilities with valid SPARC permits.

Transit Changes:

  • Bus #68 – Totem Park to East Mall. 
    • Time: 9:30 PM – 11:00 PM
    • A Traffic Control Person will temporarily stop the bus at Thunderbird Blvd and Thunderbird Crescent. After stopping, the bus will be directed down East Mall to 16th Ave.

Construction related road closures

Construction for Lot 26 in Wesbrook Place will begin in October 2025 with a targeted completion date of November 2027. The demolition of the old sales office will commence on October 1st, 2025 and excavation activities for the new development will start on November 1st, 2025.  All efforts will be made to minimize disruption to adjacent residents. Variances to construction hours will  be permitted when absolutely necessary. 

What to expect: 

  • Site access will be off of Ross Drive at Gray Avenue. 
  • Truck traffic is restricted to only use Ross Drive to Wesbrook Mall or 16th Avenue (not Gray Avenue). 
  • Staging area for materials will be at Ross Drive / Birney Avenue, which was also used for Lot 6 (Wordsworth).
  • Sidewalks around the construction site will be closed for the duration of construction. 
  • Layby parking next to the site on Grey Avenue will be closed for the duration of construction for erosion sediment control tanks and to house the site office.

Development on the corner of Wesbrook Mall and Binning Avenue will have some impact on roads and traffic (see Development Projects page for project details:

  • Binning Avenue east of Wesbrook Mall is currently closed to the general public. 
  • The sidewalk along the east side of Wesbrook Mall along the length of the construction site and the contractor parking will be intermittently closed for safety during construction activity. Pedestrians will be detoured to the sidewalk along the west side of Wesbrook Mall during this time. 
  • Parking along the east side of Wesbrook Mall will be intermittently closed to accommodate construction needs throughout construction.
  • Nearly all construction related traffic are to arrive and depart the site to the south to reduce impacts on the community.

 

Wesbrook Place Construction

An expansion to the Beaty Biodiversity Centre is current underway and will result in some road closures that are typically used by pedestrians, cyclists and service vehicles (see map above). Visit the project page to learn more about the addition. 

This is currently in place. Please obey flaggers and signage and use Lower Mall to move northbound through campus.
