A colourful mural with an inspiring safety message for cyclists will be painted in the Fraser River Parkade this spring.

UBC students’ Adam Sibbald and Mason McIntosh’s artwork was chosen from ten designs entered in the annual “Beautify My Bike Cage” mural contest. This year there were ten designs submitted to the contest following the theme “Cycling and Safety.”

“Mason and I wanted to paint the mural as a way to give back to UBC by injecting a small bit of colour into an otherwise dark corner of the Fraser parkade,” said Sibbald.

“We loved the idea of creating something that would hopefully inspire the broader UBC community to bike to campus and to do so in a safe and responsible manner — no matter the season. We’re really looking forward to completing this project and leaving our creative mark on campus.”

A committee comprised of students and staff from UBC Wellbeing and Campus and Community Planning chose the winning entry. The contest was created by Campus and Community Planning to bring colourful artwork into the utilitarian bike cages on campus. The committee felt that the tag line "No matter the weather, ride safe together" beautifully expressed the cycling and safety theme.

“The Beautify My Bike Cage” murals are created by our community, for our community” said Shiloh Bouvette, Manager, Community Programs and Outreach. With this annual contest we have installed three murals that highlight the work of UBC artists and animate bike parking facilities across campus.”
