Walter Gage Road

The eastern portion of Walter Gage Road is getting a face lift, which will improve the safety and pedestrian experience. Road construction will begin on September 7, 2021 and is estimated to be completed in October 2021.

Construction timeline and Detours

Construction will begin on September 7th, 2021 and is estimated to be completed in October 2021.

During this time, Walter Gage Road (from the east edge of Walter Gage Residence to Wesbrook Mall) will be fully closed, but it will be open from the west end at East Mall to maintain access for residents, guests and visitors. Please stay tuned to this page, or follow us on @campusUBC for construction and detour updates.

Overview

Improvements to Walter Gage Road are being done as part of the area planning for the U Boulevard precinct. Walter Gage Road is located north of Gage student housing hub and serves student residences, Chancellor Place residents, the theological colleges, and UBC academic buildings. There are two active construction projects at each end of Walter Gage Road. At the east end next to Wesbrook Mall is a new student residence and at the west end is the Arts Student Centre, which is wrapping up construction in September. Brock Commons Phase 2 will kick off this summer in advance of the Walter Gage Road improvement project.

Walter Gage Road upgrades

What we heard from you

Through a public engagement process that took place in February 2019, we asked the UBC community to provide feedback on options for improving Walter Gage Road. The general response was support for the proposed design concepts to improve the road. And now we’re ready to proceed with the upgrades.

What’s changing?

  1. Sidewalks will be added on both sides of Walter Gage Road (from the east edge of Walter Gage Residence to Wesbrook Mall).
  2. A new pedestrian crossing will be added east of Walter Gage Residence.
  3. Parallel parking will be added directly in front of the new residence building facing Walter Gage Road to accommodate quick pick-up / drop-off.
  4. Walter Gage Road will be realigned so that it intersects closer to a right angle with Wesbrook Mall. This will improve driving, walking and cycling conditions for those turning on to Wesbrook Mall.

What’s next?

The improvements to Walter Gage Road are closely tied to the Wesbrook Mall upgrades. Over the past two years, work has been underway on the Wesbrook Mall corridor from 16th Avenue to Chancellor Boulevard to enhance the safety and experience for buses, pedestrians and cyclists. Construction for the next phase of upgrades will commence in Spring 2022. More information will be shared closer to the start  of construction.
