Visioning the future of recreation and athletics facilities on the Vancouver campus.

As the campus population grows, so does UBC’s need for expanded recreation and sports facilities for the thousands of students, faculty, staff and residents who make use of these facilities. From the recreational swimmer using the Aquatic Centre, to the Intramurals teams using the Student Recreation Centre, to the UBC Thunderbirds teams playing on center court at War Memorial Gym, the UBC community are clearly active users of these spaces on campus.

However, recreational fitness space, gymnasium space, and support facilities are currently limited on the Vancouver campus. In a study of other peer North American universities, UBC ranks as having significantly less fitness space per student than comparable universities.

In addition to space limitations, some of UBC’s most well-used athletic facilities are aging and nearing the end of their life-cycle.

Public Consultation: October 3 - 23

To meet this growing need for recreational fitness and gymnasium space on campus, as well as address aging athletics facilities, like War Memorial Gym and Thunderbird Stadium, UBC is developing a long-range strategy.

This fall, a public consultation will invite feedback on an emerging concept proposes creating two distinct areas for athletics facilities: a Recreation Hub and a Spectator Hub. The Hub concept focuses future development near existing facilities, improving connections between students, athletes, staff, community members and training programs.
