Main Mall and University Boulevard form the organizational spines and pedestrian core of UBC. They represent the symbolic centre of campus and support a sense of permanence, history and dignity.

Main Mall (Flag Pole Plaza through Thunderbird Boulevard) and University Boulevard (East Mall through Education Road) are now pedestrian- and cyclist-only zones. Vehicle access is restricted to emergency vehicles only.

Pedestrian Core Improvements

Implementation of the pedestrian core began in the Summer of 2011 with Main Mall (between Koerner Plaza and University Boulevard) and Agricultural Road, and was completed in the Fall of 2012.

The pedestrian experience has been significantly improved by replacing roads with high-quality pedestrian promenades that are flush with adjacent lawn areas. These walkways form the framework for a classic campus landscape of broad lawns and historic shade trees.
