Climate Action Plan 2020

Overview

An update to UBC’s Climate Action Plan for the UBC Vancouver campus was developed with input received through a two-phase consultation process with the university community between May 2015 and June 2016, and was presented to the UBC Board of Governors in June 2016.

The Plan built upon the success of the 2010 Climate Action Plan that outlined the significant actions which enabled UBC to realize a 30% reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in 2015, compared to a 2007 baseline, despite an increase in building space and student enrolment. The update outlined a clear 5-year roadmap for UBC to continue this progress toward meeting the approved 2020 GHG reduction target of 67%. To achieve this target, the Plan outlines several policies and actions that include areas such as existing buildings, new buildings, behavior change, UBC-owned fleet, and energy supply.

2015-16 Public Consultation 

The public consultation process was essential to ensuring the update to UBC’s Climate Action Plan met the campus community’s needs.

Public consultation occurred between May 2015 and June 2016 over two phases. Each phase included opportunities for input from the campus community, including students, faculty, staff, campus residents and alumni. The process was led by Campus and Community Planning, in collaboration with UBC Energy & Water Services.

Phase I – Fall 2015 

In the first phase, the public was offered both online and in-person opportunities to identify issues and opportunities that related to GHG reductions. Key staff, researchers, and external collaborators were engaged in a series of four idea generating workshops that focused on behaviour change, UBC-owned fleet, energy supply options, and energy use in buildings. Proposals were also received from the UBC research community along with ideas from the broader campus community.

The feedback from this phase helped identify the opportunities for GHG reductions, and informed the policy actions presented in Phase II.

Phase II – Spring 2016 

In the second phase, after evaluating ideas received in Phase I and completing a technical and feasibility analysis, we consulted the campus community on potential actions and options UBC could pursue as part of the Climate Action Plan.
