UBC is a great place to be a kid! From our youngest residents singing songs with seniors, to school age children exploring science and nature under the gigantic grey whale skeleton at Beatty Biodiversity Museum, our campus is an engaging place to grow up.

Campus and Community Planning’s Community Development team, working under the banner of UTown @UBC, heads up a number of programs for kids who live in UBC’s student family housing (such as Acadia Park) and in UNA neighbourhoods

“Last year we collaborated with more than 40 partners, on and off campus, to grow our family and child-focused community program offerings,” said Shiloh Bouvette, Manager of Community Programs and Outreach. “Our goal is to leverage all of our wonderful assets here on campus to help deliver dynamic programming that helps kids who call UBC home, learn, play and thrive.”

Partnering with UTown @UBC are groups such as the UBC Arts and Culture District, Alma Mater Society (AMS), Beaty Biodiversity Museum, Student Housing and Hospitality Services (SHHS), UB’ School of Kinesiology, University Neighbourhoods Association (UNA), and the Vancouver School Board.

Last year, Community Development introduced three new events to campus: Car Free Morning, which transformed a street near Norma Rose Point Elementary School into a family-friendly festival as part of Walk n’ Roll to School; Kids Takeover UBC, which gave kids adult-sized roles in a fun-filled arts festival; and Pride Picnic, an outdoor party to celebrate diversity, inclusion and positive space.

Each year, the Acadia Family Fair introduces student families to local service organizations in Vancouver. The family-friendly event provides entertainment for children and important resources for student parents living at Acadia Residence at UBC.
