The 2018 fall edition of Bike to Work (+ School) Week could have just as easily been called the rainfall edition, but that didn’t deter hundreds of UBC cyclists from logging the most rides in the region.

During the wet week of October 29 to November 4, 2018, the bi-annual regional competition saw 315 UBC riders on 77 teams collectively ride 18,500 kilometres and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 4,000kg.

Organizing non-profit cycling advocacy group HUB reported that region-wide, nearly 5,500 riders registered to ride a total of 218,228 kilometres.

And while the precipitation may have kept some fair-weather cyclists from pedaling, this year’s campus commitment saw UBC once again earn the title for Best in Higher Education and Best Workplace (1000+ Employees), showing that cycling year-round at UBC is possible.

Over 200 staff, faculty, students and community members attended UBC’s Celebration Station, held October 30 outside the UBC Bookstore. Celebrating participants and cycling as a method of transportation, the station featured free bike-tune ups, registration with Project 529 anti-bike theft program, information about UBC’s new campus bike share program, and free giveaways and prizes.
