Have your say on the future of UBC's athletics and recreation facilities strategy October 3-23.

Between October 3 and 23, UBC Athletics together with Campus + Community Planning are running a public consultation to get input from the campus community on a series of proposed options to inform a long-term strategy for recreation and athletics facilities at UBC.

Students, faculty, staff, alumni, and residents are encouraged to participate in the consultation either in person or online at planning.ubc.ca/ubcgameplan.

Did you know?

  1. This consultation follows up on an earlier needs assessment and survey done by Athletics in 2015. More than 8,000 UBC students responded to a survey and over 60 per cent of those students said that limited facilities and programs were a constraint to being more active.
  2. The long-term strategy is a framework to guide where and when UBC should invest in athletics and recreation facilities and will  address the lack of recreation and gymnasium space on campus, aging facilities (specifically War Memorial Gym and Thunderbird Stadium), and increasing support space for athletics and recreation programs.
  3. When compared to peer universities, UBC has significantly less fitness centre space for the total population of students. UBC has 0.15 square feet of fitness centre space per student, which is lower than Simon Fraser University, University of Victoria, Queens, University of Toronto, Western, University of Alberta, and University of Manitoba.
  4. The proposed options for a facilities strategy are centered on the idea of two hubs on campus. The Spectator Hub focusses on the area around Thunderbird Stadium and the Recreation Hub focusses on the area around War Memorial Gym.
  5. Your feedback in this public consultation will help inform the options that will be presented to the UBC Board of Governors in 2017.
  6. There are two ways to participate in the public consultation. Join the conversation and give your input online or visit on of the Open House events taking place on UBC campus.
