Green spaces add vibrancy to UBC neighbourhoods

UBC’s neighbourhoods have an abundance of green space, and a range of recreational and childcare facilities that would be the envy of any municipality. They are all part of the University’s long-term plan to create a vibrant, diverse, sustainable community on campus.

On a hot day in August, three teenage girls are playing on the swings at Khorana Park in Wesbrook Village.

Arts and culture trek on with the Ticket Trike

A three-wheeled bike is spreading the news about arts and culture on the UBC campus.

Arts and cultural venues at UBC Vancouver often face a challenge in reaching students and faculty to inform them about on-campus events, programming, and exhibitions. The Arts and Culture District, which encompasses UBC’s galleries, theatres, and other cultural venues, has found a sustainable solution to the problem: a three-wheeled ticket-selling tricycle.

You are invited to join your neighbours and meet staff from the University Neighbourhoods Association (UNA) and UBC Campus + Community Planning.

This a great opportunity for residents to meet Johanne Blenkin, UNA Executive Director, Aubrey Kelly, President and CEO of UBC Properties Trust, and Michael White, Associate Vice President, UBC Campus + Community Planning.

We look forward to discussing some of the current and emerging planning issues for UBC’s neighbourhoods. Do you have a concern or question? We want to hear from you.

Transit, car, car share, bike, walk, skateboard... How do you travel to and from campus?
You are invited to share your views on traveling to and from the UBC Point Grey campus.

We are looking for input from students, faculty, and staff to help guide future transportation planning, and give us insights into what efforts need to be made to support more sustainable travel.

The survey is open until Monday, Nov 27, 2017.  All completed surveys will be entered to win one of four Mobi by Shaw Go standard annual bike share memberships.

UBC Community Conversations offer residents a great opportunity to learn about planning and programs in UBC's neighbourhoods.

More than 70 UBC residents and their children took the opportunity to attend the latest Community Conversations event on November 27.

Held at the Old Barn Community Centre, the event provided an informal setting for residents to meet staff from Campus + Community Planning, University Neighbourhoods Association (UNA) and UBC Properties Trust.

Revolving Gardens puts a new spin on green walls

News-July2017-gardens-2.jpg

UBC mechanical engineering students have put a new spin on the “green wall” with the recently installed Revolving Gardens, a SEEDS Sustainability Program project in the AMS Student Nest.

The innovative green wall is comprised of several, large wooden pods with hanging plants positioned along windows in the foyer of the Great Hall. What makes this version of a green wall unique is that the pods slowly spin to catch the sunlight during the day thanks to a solar panel. The plants also water and fertilize themselves courtesy of a custom-built automatic irrigation system.

Look out for Night Lights at the Nest

A student-led installation in collaboration with the SEEDS Sustainability Program brings together art and sustainability through a mythological lens.

Emi Cho is a fourth year visual art student at UBC with a background in sustainability, an interest in history, and a passion for mythology. All three of these themes have made their way into a new public art installation in the AMS Student Nest.
