A Q&A with Joe Stott on his retirement.

In May Joe Stott retired from UBC, leaving a legacy that can be seen and experienced in every corner of campus.

He joined the University’s planning department in 2003 having worked in local government in the Lower Mainland for 25 years. From 1989 to 1999, he was a senior planner with the Greater Vancouver Regional District (Metro Vancouver).

The baton has been passed to Grant Miller

Grant Miller joined UBC’s Campus and Community Planning team in 2015 as the new Director of Planning, Development Services. He and his team are responsible for ensuring that buildings at UBC are built to be safe, and that campus projects contribute to a complete community where people can live, work, learn and play.

Managing UBC’s water, roads, waste, and energy.

On the third floor of UBC’s Center for Interactive Research on Sustainability (CIRS), four offices hold water management plans, road and transit maps, energy efficiently plans, and images of campus recycling stations. 

These offices belong to Doug Doyle, Krista Falkner, Ralph Wells, and Bud Fraser, four Campus and Community Planning staff members who are part of the Sustainability and Engineering team.

Principles for Musqueam and UBC Collaboration.

“We all have a role to play in building a strong relationship between UBC and Musqueam, if not by direct collaboration, by education and awareness,” says Aaron Lao, a Master of Arts (School of Community and Regional Planning) candidate.

As a UBC Sustainability Scholar, Aaron worked with the Musqueam First Nation to identify principles for collaboration and engagement between the University of British Columbia (UBC) and the Musqueam First Nation around sustainability and wellbeing.

Visioning the future of recreation and athletics facilities on the Vancouver campus.

As the campus population grows, so does UBC’s need for expanded recreation and sports facilities for the thousands of students, faculty, staff and residents who make use of these facilities. From the recreational swimmer using the Aquatic Centre, to the Intramurals teams using the Student Recreation Centre, to the UBC Thunderbirds teams playing on center court at War Memorial Gym, the UBC community are clearly active users of these spaces on campus.

Have your say on the future of UBC's athletics and recreation facilities strategy October 3-23.

Between October 3 and 23, UBC Athletics together with Campus + Community Planning are running a public consultation to get input from the campus community on a series of proposed options to inform a long-term strategy for recreation and athletics facilities at UBC.

Students, faculty, staff, alumni, and residents are encouraged to participate in the consultation either in person or online at planning.ubc.ca/ubcgameplan.
