Tips for bike safety during COVID-19

With warm spring weather on the horizon, many people currently working from home are eager to get outside on their bikes. However, with physical distancing requirements due to COVID-19, safety remains a top concern for many. Krista Falkner, Transportation Engineer from Campus and Community Planning, provides us with some tips on how to bike safely during COVID-19. 

“Exercise is great for mental well-being, staying healthy, and boosting the mood of the whole family, but it needs to be done with personal distancing guidelines and safety in mind,” said Falkner.

The following is an update on the steps that we are taking to keep our staff, clients and the UBC community safe.

Due to precautions around Coronavirus (COVID-19), many staff members from Campus and Community Planning are working at home and our offices are currently not open to the public. Here is what you need to know.

6 Pieces of Public Art for the 21st Century

UBC’s lush outdoor spaces have been reinvigorated by a program bringing public art to the campus. Together, these artworks express a wonderful variety of stories and attitudes about the history of UBC and Vancouver, as part of an ever-evolving narrative about art, space and place, and our own sense of ourselves. 

Here are a few highlights — public art for the 21st century, to be discovered, admired and contemplated as you walk the campus.

CANCELLED BMO Vancouver Marathon

EVENT DETAILS

Organized by the Vancouver International Marathon Society, the BMO Vancouver Marathon is the only marathon in the city and will be celebrating its 45th Anniversary.  The marathon promotes Vancouver's active lifestyle, engaging participants and community partners to create a positive and memorable experience. 

There will be approximately 15,000 participants. 

Reach Out and Run (ROAR)

Annual event to raise awareness of mental health and reduce the stigma surrounding mental health conditions.  The event is also a fundraiser for Mood Disorders Society of Canada and the Mental Health Awareness Club

Setup will occur at 7am with takedown immediately following the event to approximately 8pm.

Anticipated 200 participants.

Start/finish at University Commons.

University Boulevard and West side of Main Mall will remain accessible for pedestrians, cyclists and emergency vehicles.

Kids Take Over UBC

You must be this young to ride! Kids of UBC are taking the wheel at this arts festival.

Celebrate Family Day weekend by bringing your entire family to the third annual Kids Takeover UBC on Sunday, February 16. This UBC Family Day tradition has its roots in Takeover Day, which is a celebration of children and young people’s contributions to museums, galleries, arts organizations, archives and heritage sites first launched in the UK.
